Haleakala Crater
Last night ended up with an entertaining stage show with a Polynesian theme. Having been to dinner for 7:00, we impressed ourselves by making it to the 9:00 show. Today we were off to the summit of the island and its principle dormant volcano Haleakala. Because we were going to altitude, we actually dressed more warmly, which didn't feel right at ship level. We hit some heavy rain at the beginning of the journey, but the skies cleared as we climbed higher in altitude. After a brief stop at the Kyla Marketplace, we continued the climb. Closer to the summit, we started to see these interesting silver plants called Ahinahina or silver sword, growing out of the lava.
When we got to the summit, we were at 10023 ft or 3055 metres. The views from here speak for themselves.
Haleakala last erupted in 1790 and is still simmering beneath the surface. You can see signs of the lava flow going to both sides of the island.
We were back to the ship for lunch once again, where we met a nice Aussie couple. We then retired to the room for a bit of R&R on our balcony plus a bit of Bite Me. Dinner tonight was in Liberty, one of the Grand Dining Rooms here and then the day finished was a show featuring musical theatre highlights.
