Carrieres de Lumieres

After yesterday's nastiness we awoke to classic Provencal skies. This was our day to head south to the Plus Beaux Village of Les Baux de Provence. In recent visits when we make this trip we totally bypass the village and head straight for the abandoned bauxite quarries. Not that the village is not worth visiting, as is noted in the above pic of the imposing chateau, but simply that "We've been there, done that". I think this is the third time we've been to this sound and light show in the abandonned bauxite quarries of Les Baux. This year's show featured the art of Van Gogh and his inspiration, Japonese art. The walls of the bauxite quarry serve as the canvas for this work of art. There are projections on every surface of the quarry including the floors. They are seldom static and moving about the display can be challenging when the floor is swirling. Because the display featured the works of Van Gogh, everything was in broad strokes of bold colours. Following the show we had lunch in the hills outside the quarry. It was a fabulous day for a pique nique. We made a quick stop at Auchan on the way back to Cairanne but were back on the sunny terrace by 4:00 enjoying these views. Dinner tonight was duck breast and the French duck is never disappointing. The evening cooled off significantly - What? - and we finally retreated to the indoors. It was a fine Provencal sunset.
