Nyons, Lavender and Mourchon
Today was our first hop across the hill to the next valley, a drive we always enjoy, with the inevitable stop for a photo.
Nyons market was as busy as ever and we came away with some nice acquisitions.
We then drove towards home and found a good pique nique spot with a table. After lunch we returned to Chez P for a short respite before heading out in search of lavender fields. We have never been in France at the right time to see the lavender in bloom and since Carole was keen to see the lavender as well,
off we went. For some reason I had a recollection of lavender growing, but not in season, close to Uchaux, not far away, so that was where we headed. We lucked out and found two large areas just off D11 in the outskirts of Uchaux.
Finally, we decided a visit to Domaine Mourchon was in order, because after all, we needed to get the scoop on the health of the owner Walter McKinley, who at 85 has apparently had some health concerns.
We discovered that Walter now spends half of his time in London, that Hugo - ex son-in-law - is no longer in the picture, the two teenage children are in boarding school in England and his daughter Kate is pretty much running the show. Regarding Walter's health, apprently he is on the mend, recovering from what was potentially a stroke.
We did the tasting, with a young French woman who spoke excellent English, going through the whole range of products and they are still fabulous. We missed the weekly visit from the Rick Steeves group by about 10 minutes - good thing.
After a short time back at Chez Pigeon, we headed down on foot to the Tourne au Verre for dinner. In the past there have been mixed reviews about this place, so we were eager to find out the real truth.
The menu for this evening had 7 starters and main courses. Tonight, dinner was on the outdoor patio. We opted for mains only and had lamb shank for Claude and Dawn and ravioli with pesto and parmesan for Carole while Bill had ravioli with foie gras - surprise!? We all loved our meals. We accompanied dinner with a very affordable (24E) Boisson White wine.
Dessert accompanied with Beaumes de Venise, was a big ice cream dish plus a bouchon rum for me.
We would unanimously give Tourne au Verre two thumbs up. Good food! Good value! Good service! Bonus - We don't have to drive! On the way back up to Chez P, I took this picture and although my critics may accuse me of doctoring my photos, I did NOTHING to this picture.
