Cairanne September 12

After last night’s deluge, the weather changed significantly. The hot muggy stuff we’d had for the past few days was replaced by cooler, drier, breezier air influenced by the Mistral.

We left mid morning for Cairanne to visit Peter & Margaret Pigeon and did a small detour by the Pontet Auchan. Peter & Margaret have had their house at the top of old Cairanne for 4 years now and the main house upper floor with two bedrooms and terraces is now finished. The kitchen, living and dining room still have a ways to go, but as Peter is now planning to sub contract some of the next stage of work, the main floor could be habitable by Christmas.
Margaret had a nice lunch prepared for us and we got into some very fine whites from Burgundy. After getting caught up, we visited 3 local wineries and found all of them had outstanding wines at decent prices. One must make a point of stepping back and appreciating this location, with its commanding view of both the Rhone Valley and the Dentelles hills.

On returning to their house, we played some cards – learned a new game called Bite Me - and then headed down the hill on foot to the local restaurant. This restaurant called la Tourne au Verre offers only one choice each evening for 32 Euros and this evening it was an amuse bouche of goat cheese with balsamic vinegar, followed by an appetizer of rabbit terrine and salad, with salmon, risotto and a mélange of mushrooms for main course and a lovely sorbet/ ice cream cake for dessert. Every course was outstanding and even though there was no choice in food, the wine list was incredible. The locals flock to this place so it was packed and very lively.

After dinner we found the ascent up the hill a little more difficult than the earlier descent – surprise! But, we made it and finished up our card game - Margaret won - before retiring for the evening.
The breeze did diminish a little before bedtime, but I suspect there is seldom a moment that there isn’t some kind of breeze up here.
