Marseilles

Our drive from Collioure this morning was a little under four hours, in light traffic and fabulous blue skies. Because it was Sunday and Father's Day to boot, the streets were very navigable, so we found our Hotel Mercure easily and checked in. We have been here before and enjoy it for its convenient location at the end of the port. There are also great views of Notre Dame de la Garde from our rooms. We quickly ventured out for lunch to the La Brasserie for a "light" lunch. The girls had salads which could have fed a village , while Claude and I had tartare with salad and fries, which I hope does not come back to bite me. We then took a short walk around the harbour to check out the mirrored ceiling - always got to take the pic. - a break dance performer, other restaurants and the sights in general. This included the Bar de la Marine, the shoot location for the proposal by Colin Firth in the movie Love Actually. In a city like this with limited parking, it is clearly intelligent to own a Smart car. Since it was Father's Day, we Face Timed with home tonight before going out to dinner. This is always a treat and now with Ben the fun continues. Dinner was a short stroll from the Mercure at the Miramar seafood restaurant. Tonight was a sultry one, unlike last night's chilly finish and we ate outside until 10:00 with no discomfort. It turns out that we had chosen a fairly highend restaurant for C&C's last night. There was no wine for under $100 and maincourses were over $50. Our concluding assessment was that the food was well worth the cost. Seafood was the speciality here and dishes were creatively presented like Dawn and Claude's rascasse (scorpion fish) surrounded by peppers and mussels and my gambas (shrimp), finished with flaming pastis. This is a very beautiful city at night.
